E-Scooter Battery Fire Leaves Basildon Family Unable to Return Home

A family in Basildon has been left unable to return to their home following a fire involving an e-scooter battery that had been left charging overnight.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service was called to the property at approximately 10:03am on Saturday after an e-scooter battery caught fire while on charge.

When firefighters arrived, they found the property heavily affected by smoke, with a fire located in the kitchen. Crews acted quickly to bring the incident under control and prevent the fire from spreading to a neighbouring property.

Fortunately, nobody was injured during the incident. The residents were able to leave the property quickly and contact the emergency services.

Lithium-ion battery fires can develop rapidly and may produce intense heat, flames and large quantities of smoke. In some circumstances, batteries can also fail violently, making early detection and a clear means of escape particularly important.
